A Study in Heritage, Structure and Enduring Sophistication – Lorenzo Riva, Oscar de la Renta and Burberry
In the ever-evolving world of fashion, certain designers distinguish themselves through a mastery of heritage, structure, and enduring elegance. In this installment of our series exploring catwalk designers to watch for millinery inspiration, we turn our attention to three houses that exemplify sophistication with substance: Lorenzo Riva, Oscar de la Renta, and Burberry.
Lorenzo Riva, celebrated for his refined Italian couture, built a legacy rooted in craftsmanship and timeless glamour, dressing international icons while maintaining a distinctly European sensibility. Oscar de la Renta brought Dominican heritage and Parisian training together to create designs synonymous with polished femininity and red-carpet grandeur. Meanwhile, Burberry, with its rich British history, has long balanced innovation and tradition — from pioneering gabardine to redefining the modern trench coat.
Though each house emerges from a different cultural landscape, they share a commitment to elegance, precision, and lasting design. Together, they remind us that true style is not fleeting — it is constructed, considered, and confidently timeless. Join us as we explore the craftsmanship, heritage, and defining catwalk moments that position Lorenzo Riva, Oscar de la Renta, and Burberry as enduring sources of millinery inspiration.
Lorenzo Riva
Born in Monza, Italy, Lorenzo Riva was immersed in fashion from an early age as the son of a mannequin. At just 18, he opened his first atelier in his hometown, demonstrating remarkable talent and ambition. Riva’s breakout came in 1972 when he presented his first couture collection at Florence’s prestigious Palazzo Pitti, establishing himself as a visionary in Italian fashion.
Throughout his career, he served as artistic director for several renowned fashion houses, including Balenciaga, before launching his own solo brand in 1991. Over the years, Riva dressed a host of international celebrities, including Whitney Houston, Penélope Cruz, Ivana Trump, Virna Lisi, Isabella Rossellini, and Emmanuelle Seigner, earning a reputation for elegance, sophistication, and timeless glamour.
In 2012, he sold his brand and began collaborating as creative director with Duomosei, and in 2017, he launched the collection L’Or by Lorenzo Riva, continuing to innovate and inspire. Lorenzo Riva passed away in Monza on 16 December 2023, leaving behind a legacy of Italian couture celebrated for its refinement, artistry, and enduring influence.

Oscar De La Renta
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Óscar de la Renta showed artistic talent from an early age. At 18, he moved to Spain to study painting at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, but his sketches of dresses quickly caught the attention of fashion patrons, leading him into the world of couture. He apprenticed with the legendary Cristóbal Balenciaga and later worked under Antonio del Castillo, honing his craft and developing a signature elegance.
De la Renta became internationally renowned in the 1960s, dressing Jacqueline Kennedy and establishing himself as a preeminent couturier. He led major fashion houses including Jane Derby, Lanvin, and Balmain, and launched his own eponymous label, which grew into a global brand with boutiques around the world. His designs have graced countless celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Penélope Cruz, Ivana Trump, Virna Lisi, Isabella Rossellini, and Emmanuelle Seigner, celebrated for their refined glamour, femininity, and sophistication.
Beyond fashion, de la Renta expanded into fragrance, accessories, and homewares, while earning numerous accolades, including multiple CFDA awards, the Légion d’honneur from France, and recognition from the Dominican Republic for his philanthropic work. Burberry
Founded in 1856 by 21-year-old Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, England, Burberry began as a small drapery shop before establishing itself as a pioneer in outerwear. In 1879, Burberry introduced gabardine, a water-resistant yet breathable fabric, which became a hallmark of the brand’s innovative approach to fashion. The company’s iconic trench coat emerged during the First World War, originally designed for British officers, and quickly became a symbol of elegance and practicality.
Over the 20th century, Burberry expanded its influence globally, outfitting explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton, while its signature check became synonymous with British heritage. The brand evolved through leadership and creative reinvention, including strategic expansions into Asia and Europe, and a revitalization under Rose Marie Bravo in the late 1990s and early 2000s that firmly re-established Burberry as a luxury fashion house.
With boutiques worldwide and a legacy of innovation, craftsmanship, and timeless style, Burberry remains an enduring emblem of British fashion, blending heritage with contemporary sophistication.
