As we continue our journey through the world of haute couture, part 4 will shine a spotlight on more trailblazers who have made their mark in the industry. This time, we’ll explore the exquisite craftsmanship of Ralph & Russo, the playful creativity of Moschino, and the daring, boundary-pushing designs of John Galliano. Each of these designers has carved a unique niche in the fashion landscape, offering a refreshing perspective on luxury, innovation, and individuality. Let’s dive into their fascinating stories and the masterpieces they’ve created along the way.
Ralph and Russo
Ralph & Russo, founded in 2006 by Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, emerged as a prestigious British high fashion house specializing in haute couture and ready-to-wear collections, luxury goods, and fashion accessories. Situated in the heart of Mayfair, London, the company followed in the footsteps of the city's rich couture tradition. It quickly garnered international attention, and in 2014, Ralph & Russo became the first British fashion house in over a century to be accredited by the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, cementing its place in the upper echelons of fashion. This accomplishment also made them the only British brand with this coveted status to date.
The house’s growth over the years has been nothing short of remarkable, with flagship stores in London, Paris, Doha, Dubai, and Monaco, furthering its global presence. Ralph & Russo made a bold move into ready-to-wear in 2018, receiving critical acclaim for its luxurious yet accessible designs, including gowns and evening dresses that reflect the modern luxury aesthetic. The brand's designs have been worn by high-profile figures, including Meghan Markle, Angelina Jolie, and Aishwarya Rai, making their mark on red carpets and high-profile events around the world.
However, despite its initial success, Ralph & Russo has faced significant challenges. In March 2020, the company entered administration, and its founders became the subject of investigations related to financial mismanagement. This marked a turning point in the brand's history, as it navigated through financial troubles and restructuring. In 2021, Retail E-Commerce Ventures, led by Tai Lopez, acquired a controlling stake in the company, which helped it exit administration. Yet, in 2023, rumors of a potential bankruptcy filing once again cast uncertainty over the future of the fashion house.
Ralph & Russo's story is one of both extraordinary achievements and turbulent setbacks. With its signature elegance and innovative designs, the brand’s journey continues to captivate the fashion world, proving that it remains a formidable name in the haute couture industry.

Moschino
Franco Moschino (27 February 1950 – 18 September 1994) was an iconic Italian fashion designer and the founder of the luxury fashion house Moschino. Known for his irreverent, playful, and often satirical designs, Moschino became one of the most influential designers of his era. Born in Abbiategrasso, a small town near Milan, Moschino initially followed his family's wishes and pursued a career in the iron foundry business. However, his true passion lay in the arts, particularly painting, leading him to run away to Milan in 1968 to attend the Brera Academy. To support himself, he worked as a freelance fashion illustrator, a job that ignited his interest in fashion design. Eventually, Moschino switched gears and enrolled at the prestigious Marangoni Institute, where he honed his skills.
After completing his education in 1971, Moschino's first major career milestone came when he joined Gianni Versace as an illustrator. He worked with Versace for six years, contributing to the brand's visual aesthetic before moving on to design for the Italian label Cadette from 1977 to 1982. Moschino’s creative vision was unique, and in 1983, he founded his own fashion house, Moonshadow, and launched Moschino Couture!. Initially focusing on casual wear and denim, Moschino soon expanded his offerings to include lingerie, eveningwear, shoes, menswear, and fragrances. The brand quickly gained attention for its whimsical designs and irreverent commentary on the fashion industry.
Moschino’s signature style was characterized by bold, unconventional designs that often incorporated humor and social commentary. Some of his most memorable creations included a quilted denim miniskirt with plastic fried eggs decorating the hemline and a jacket adorned with bottle caps. His use of unusual materials, like safety pins for bodices, earned him comparisons to Jean-Paul Gaultier, though Moschino himself insisted that their approaches were different. While Gaultier experimented with new shapes and fabrics, Moschino used traditional techniques and basic forms but infused them with playful, subversive elements. One of his most famous pieces was a cashmere jacket embroidered with the phrase "Expensive Jacket" in gold across the back, poking fun at the high-fashion industry's obsession with status symbols.
Throughout his career, Moschino was known for satirizing and poking fun at the world of luxury fashion. He famously mocked the classic Chanel jacket by adding bold, garish trimmings, and he designed a matador-style outfit labeled "Bull Chic." His clothes were a hit with celebrities and fashion-forward individuals, leading to Moschino's rise to fame. In addition to his work as a designer, Moschino was also known for his charitable efforts, including fundraising for children's hospices for AIDS patients.
Tragically, Moschino’s life was cut short when he passed away in 1994 at the age of 44. The cause of death was cardiac arrest due to complications from surgery, but it was later revealed that Moschino's death was AIDS-related. His passing left a void in the fashion world, but his legacy lives on. Following his death, Rossella Jardini, his former assistant, became creative director of the brand. Later, in 2013, LA designer Jeremy Scott took over, ushering in a new era of Moschino with bold, pop-culture-infused collections.
Moschino’s clothes continue to be worn by some of the world’s most famous celebrities, including Madonna, Princess Diana, Katy Perry, and Nicki Minaj. The Moschino brand remains a symbol of playful luxury and a reminder of Franco Moschino’s unique ability to blend high fashion with wit, humor, and social consciousness. His designs are still celebrated for their irreverence and creativity, ensuring that his legacy as a trailblazer in fashion endures.

Galliano
John Charles Galliano, CBE, RDI (born 28 November 1960), is a celebrated British fashion designer known for his extravagant, theatrical, and boundary-pushing designs. Galliano is perhaps best known for his time as creative director of the luxury fashion houses Christian Dior, Givenchy, and Maison Margiela, as well as his own eponymous label, John Galliano. Over the years, Galliano's innovative work in the fashion world has earned him numerous accolades, including being named British Designer of the Year four times and being recognized as one of the most influential people in British culture by the BBC in 2004.
Born in Gibraltar to a Gibraltarian father of Italian descent and a Spanish mother, Galliano's early life was marked by a strict Catholic upbringing. His family relocated to South London when Galliano was six, where he attended St. Anthony's Primary School and Wilson's Grammar School. Galliano's initial aspirations were in fine arts, but he found himself drawn to fashion, eventually enrolling at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Galliano graduated in 1984 with first-class honours in Fashion Design, and his final collection, inspired by the French Revolution, was well-received and bought by the London boutique Browns.
Following his graduation, Galliano launched his eponymous label with the help of collaborators such as stylist Amanda Harlech and milliner Stephen Jones. His early work caught the attention of the fashion world, but the financial backing for his London-based label was short-lived. After a failed attempt to secure consistent backing and financial support, Galliano faced bankruptcy in 1988. However, undeterred by this setback, Galliano moved to Paris in 1989, where he found backing from Moroccan designer Faycal Amor and set up his fashion base at the Plein Sud headquarters. His 1989 Paris Fashion Week show was the beginning of Galliano's rise to prominence, solidifying his place in the fashion scene.
In 1995, Galliano's career took a major leap when he was appointed head designer at Givenchy by Bernard Arnault, owner of luxury conglomerate LVMH. Galliano became the first British designer to head a French haute couture house, and his collections at Givenchy earned widespread praise. However, in 1996, LVMH moved Galliano to Christian Dior, where he replaced Gianfranco Ferré. At Dior, Galliano's reputation soared as he brought a distinct theatricality and imagination to the brand, blending traditional craftsmanship with bold, conceptual ideas.
Galliano’s tenure at Dior is perhaps best remembered for his haute couture collections, including the unforgettable chartreuse gown worn by Nicole Kidman at the 1997 Academy Awards. His designs were known for their lavish embellishments, dramatic silhouettes, and an almost cinematic quality. Galliano’s creativity and ability to reimagine historical references in modern ways helped elevate Dior to new heights of popularity and fashion influence.
In 2014, Galliano made a highly anticipated return to the fashion world when he was appointed creative director of Maison Margiela. His first couture collection for the house debuted in January 2015 during London Collections: Men, marking the start of a new chapter in his career. Galliano brought his signature flair to Margiela’s avant-garde ethos, merging his theatrical vision with the house’s deconstructed aesthetic. In 2018, Galliano unveiled Mutiny, his first fragrance for Maison Margiela, further solidifying his creative resurgence.
Galliano’s time at Maison Margiela was marked by both personal and professional growth, as he embraced new creative challenges and navigated his place in the ever-evolving fashion industry. In 2024, he left the fashion house after a decade-long tenure, continuing his legacy as one of the most influential designers of his generation.
John Galliano’s impact on the fashion world is profound. Known for his daring designs, impeccable craftsmanship, and ability to tell compelling stories through his collections, Galliano has been a key figure in reshaping fashion’s role as an art form. Despite the controversies and setbacks he faced, Galliano’s creative vision and relentless drive have ensured his place as one of the fashion industry’s most talented and complex figures. From his early days in London to his time at Dior and his creative revival at Maison Margiela, Galliano’s career is a testament to his resilience and unparalleled contribution to high fashion.
